Young Children’s Chore Observation Study (Collaborative; Early Childhood)
In collaboration with Dr. Nadia Chernyak’s lab at UC Irvine (https://www.dosclab.com/), we are investigating how children in the US from ages 3- to 9-years-old are perceiving their family’s division of chores.
Learning to Care within the Family (Qualitative; Cross-Cultural)
This project is an investigation into how American, Chinese, and Finnish families conceptualize care within the family. Study questions include, how do parents socialize children to learn to care for family members within the family?
In collaboration with scholars in Texas, USA (Dr. Carla Brailey, Texas Southern University), São Paulo, Brazil (Drs. Luciana Maria Caetano and Betânia Alves Veiga Dell’ Agli, Universidade de São Paulo), and Seoul, South Korea (Dr. Young Hwa Kim, Seoul National University of Education), the MD lab is investigating young adults’ expectations for their future (e.g., childcare, career, and marriage plans), their social attitudes, and their reasons for their expectations.
Learning from Mistakes (Collaborative; diary-study; Higher Education)
In collaboration with Dr. Jianjin Liu at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, we are currently investigating Chinese college students’ social and moral transgressions and the strategies they develop to correct their transgressions. This study builds on prior research showing that both American (Midgette, 2018) and Chinese (Liu & Midgette, 2020) adolescents reflect on their transgressions and attempt to develop strategies so that they do not engage in the behavior again. These findings served to inform an online lesson plan for teachers available on the Greater Good in Education website.
